The title Aga Khan was given in 1818 by Fath Ali Shah Qajar Shahanshah of Persia to the 46.Imam of the Ismaili sect of the Shia branch of Islam. In 1957 the Aga Khan was granted the title His Highness by Queen Elizabeth II and in 1959 His Royal Highness by the Shah of Iran. The Aga Khan descends through the Fatimid Caliphs of Egypt and Syria of Fatima, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and her husband and cousin Ali ibn Abu Talib, considered to be the first Imam. The ancestor in the male line is Qusai ibn Kilab ibn Murrah (ca. 400-480), member of the Quraysh tribe and Trustee of the Kaaba in Mecca. The family traces its ancestry back to Ismail, son of Abraham.
